A Twisted Tale of Fate and State - Recounting the Tale of Indian States and their similarity to those in the US
This
is a brief tale two states on the lateral ends of the maps, Nothing
could be so dissimilar yet entwined by history and spirit. The tale
of two countries and that were in their own right born out of
Empires, Imperialistic Ambitions and Colonial rule yet grew up with
different morals and directions. Countries that defied expectations
and went on to surpass it's predecessors in almost all rights.
This is a Tale of the United States and India. The land of opportunity, The continent that manifest destiny in more ways that what is literally represented by the words, The land which was built on Human spirit with founding fathers who stood like rocks. I'm going to share a few quotes by some of the most distinguished men that helped shape the country.
“America
was not built on fear. America was built on courage, on imagination
and an unbeatable determination to do the job at hand.”
-
President Harry S. Truman
“America
is another name for opportunity. Our whole history appears like a
last effort of divine providence on behalf of the human race.”
-
Poet Ralph Waldo Emerson
“Let
every nation know, whether it wishes us well or ill, that we shall
pay any price, bear any burden, meet any hardship, support any
friend, oppose any foe in order to assure the survival and the
success of liberty.”
-
President John F. Kennedy
Being a millennial growing up in India reading American Authors and
watching Hollywood movies, I believe this had greatly influenced me
and an entire generation of Literate and Global citizens, it gave us
perspectives and ideals that would be incomprehensible or
unacceptable to our parents. In ways we could say this ideological
succession cause the rise of Indo-Anglicans* in the country; It made
us liberals with a strong sense of ambitions and ability to
understand and empathise with those not of similar creed. These words
were meant to show the true spirit of America which seem to be
faltering and changing with the onset of recent events. Now let’s discuss about the land with a thousand names and a million inequalities, where gods are discovered, worshipped and despised in span of days, The land where chaos sets the vibes and change is the only consistent truth. The land where the “Children of the Mighty Himalayas and the Raging Oceans Reside”, The land of destiny.
We on the other hand was built on a different foundation, One that hardens when struck and loosens and becomes fluid when necessary. Our founding fathers had different things in mind a country so varied and diverse that an entity that they had to envision had to contain and represent this melting pot of cultures. A chaotic haven for ideas and ideals to come mix and become a broth cooked by chefs from all corners of the world. The word Indian entail people ranging from those of the North Sentinel Islands where civilisations has yet to enter to those of the modern metropolitan cities like those of Mumbai, Delhi etc.
Let me share with you some of the words of our founding fathers, Let be share this that the word founding father means something radically different to me than it might mean to you so here comes we go..
What
we really are matters more than what other people think of us.
-
Jawaharlal Nehru
India
allows you the luxury of a million inequalities. You can be a
schoolboy selling tea to passengers sitting in a state transport bus,
but you are royalty when compared to a shirtless, barefoot village
boy, from what was traditionally considered an untouchable caste,
living on snails and small fish - and sometimes rats.
-
Amitava Kumar
I
have a vision of India: an India free of hunger and fear, an India
free of illiteracy and want.
-
Atal Bihari Vajpayee
Lets get back on track, Let me show you some fun facts about the States in India and those of the US.
Here we go:(PS. I’m only going to go through a few cause of the countless similarities)
-
At Independence India consisted of only 13 States much like those
of the 13 colonies that joined forces against the Brits to form the
fledgling country of the United States.
Union of India United States of America MysoreVirginiaPunjabMassachusettsMadrasNew YorkBombayMarylandOrissaRhode IslandBengalConnecticutUnited ProvincesDelawareCentral ProvincesNew HampshireAssamNorth CarolinaRajasthanSouth CarolinaJ&KNew JerseyBihar PennsylvaniaUnion TerritoriesGeorgia**On the part of India this is debatable cause there were around 600 princely states which were combined to form the states in Modern India
- Texas - The lone start state, A us state made popular in India by the a famous lecture given at the Oxford Union Debate by Indian statesman Shashi Tharoor, an the Expression taken from an old Texan quote “All Hats and no Cattle”; It symbolises more than a just southern state for the US; Texans are known world round for their light hearted humour, Industrialness and Resourcefulness, The are a symbol of the country's strength though they might have had a disturbing past they are indeed a symbol of American Strength and Resilience.
In
India I’d like to nominate two states of similar valour Tamil Nadu
and Punjab; In my ventures through these states I had witnessed a
multitude of Industrialism and Entrepreneurial ambition
from the people here, They are light hearted, friendly and filled
with vigour and energy. Also they seem to have had a similar past in
the sense, In the past they had their own secessionist movements
which has long since been gone extinct.
Tamil
Nadu is one of the largest contributors to the country’s GDP and
also the people there have a strong sense of statehood, same is true
for Punjab which could also be put down as the “Jugaad” capital
of the country.
- Mumbai
and New York – The Big Apple of their respective countries, They
form the economic gateway to India and The US respectively, these
are the ultramodern cities where literally fate is made! Both cities
are near water bodies, Also on Islandish in nature, Mumbai Archipelago and The Manhattan Island.
They are a melting pot of cultures and the place where the ultra-rich of the country play ball, Both were once trading posts of the Brits and hence gateways to their respective countries. Wall Street(NY) and Dalal Street(Mumbai) are also the seats of NYSE and BSE.
- Karnataka
and California – The Tech Giants of the country; Thought in comparison to SGDP Karnataka would flail in-front of California
with an SGDP of around 2.9 Trillion USD compared to Karnataka’s
200 Billion USD.
Their respective tech-hubs being Bangalore aka Bengaluru and Silicon Valley, These are the home of many of their respective countries tech-giants. Bangalore is home to many Indo-Anglicans and has a cosmopolitan and liberal culture. It is the millennial hub of the country and has a culture unlike the rest of India.
- Florida
and Kerala – Sub Tropical paradises of the behemoths, People go to
these places to get away from the winters chills or just to have
some fun and relax.
- Washington DC and New Delhi – The administrative capitals of both the
countries and seat of Govt., Most of the Embassies or Consulates are
found here, Also home to the White House and Rastrapati Bhavan;
which seats the Presidents of the respective countries.
- Alaska
and Jammu & Kashmir(JnK) – Alaska was bought by The US from
the Russians for 7.2 Million USD in 1867, while JnK was brought into
the Indian Union by an Instrument of Accession signed by the then
Maharajah of JnK in exchange for security from the then invading
forces of Pakistan.
- Nevada
and Goa – Nevada has Las Vegas; What happens in Vegas stays in
Vegas; Goa like Las Vegas is a party poppers paradise, The place
where Indians and a lot of foreigners flock to for a fun time. With
one key difference Las Vegas being in a desert and Goa being a
Coastal state.
Honorable mentions Massachusetts, Arizona, Rhode Island, Chicago-Illinois, Good Bye folks. Please do comments and don’t forget to follow us for more articles. Hope you had fun reading about the various states and their Analogous ones in the US.
